Catalog Fix

Free tool for Squarespace store owners

Check your Squarespace product CSV before you import it

Bulk-editing products in a spreadsheet? Catalog Fix checks the file against the documented import format, fixes the safe problems, and shows each change before you download.

Each fix lists the row, column, old value and new value. Problems that need your decision are listed, not changed.

Step by step

Export, edit and re-import your products

  1. 1

In Squarespace, open the Products & Services panel and click Products.

  2. 2

Click Export all. Squarespace saves a .csv file with every physical and service product.

  3. 3

Open the file in a spreadsheet editor and make your changes. Keep the columns, and keep the rows of each product together.

  4. 4

Save it as CSV and check it here. Download the fixed file.

  5. 5

In the Products panel, click Import and drop the fixed file into the Upload Squarespace CSV box. Review the results and click Save.

A bulk edit updates the products that are already on your site, so the file must keep the exported Product ID and Variant ID values. You cannot change Product ID, Variant ID, Product type, Product page or Hosted image URLs this way. Sources: Export products to a .csv and Importing products from a .csv (Squarespace Help Center).

Rules

What Catalog Fix fixes and what it flags

The rules come from the Squarespace import guide and its sample file. A fix is made only when there is one correct result. Anything that needs your judgment, such as a category name or a price exactly halfway between two cents, is listed for you to decide.

Fixed in the download (13)

Values are separated by semicolons or tabs
Some spreadsheet programs may not export .csv files correctly. For example, they may use semicolons to separate values instead of commas.
Extra rows above the header
Missing column. Add product ID column. This means there's an extra row at the top of the spreadsheet. Ensure cell 1A reads Product ID [Non Editable].
Column name differs from the export
It's important to maintain this structure. Column names are restored to the spelling in the Squarespace sample file.
Empty row
It's important to maintain this structure. Empty rows are not products and are removed.
Empty cells past the last column
It's important to maintain this structure. Empty cells past the last column are removed.
Value repeated on an option row
If the product has multiple options, like size and color, only add this value to the first product row. A repeat of the first row's value is cleared.
Product page has a slash
Product Page: the store page URL slug where the product will import, without the /.
Product URL has capitals or a slash
Product URL: without the /. Capital letters will automatically become lowercase on your site.
Price has a currency symbol or spaces
Enter numbers and decimal points (.) only. After the import, prices will display in your store's currency.
Price has more than two decimal places
The price field only supports two decimal places, so round values to the nearest hundredth. Example: enter 10.513 as 10.51.
Yes or No in a different case
Enter Yes or No. Values are restored to the exact spelling.
Category slug has capitals
Categories: enter the URL slug from the filtered category or subcategory page, including the /. Lowercase only.
Cell starts like a spreadsheet formula
Cells that start with =, @, tab or carriage return, or with + or - followed by formula syntax, can run as formulas when the CSV is opened in a spreadsheet. An apostrophe is added in front. The apostrophe is imported as part of the value.

Flagged for you to check (42)

File is not saved as UTF-8 text Fix before import
Common formatting problems include nonstandard characters. Save the file as CSV UTF-8, then check it again.
A quoted cell is never closed Fix before import
It's important to maintain this structure, even if you edit the values in the cells. A quote mark that is not closed joins every row after it into one cell.
No product CSV header row found Fix before import
Ensure cell 1A reads Product ID [Non Editable]. Start from a file exported with Export all.
Column appears more than once Fix before import
It's important to maintain this structure. Keep one copy of each column and delete the other.
Column missing Check
It's important to maintain this structure, even if you edit the values in the cells. The exported file has this column.
Product ID is not in cell A1 Fix before import
Missing column. Add product ID column. Ensure cell 1A reads Product ID [Non Editable].
Cell A2 has no product ID Fix before import
Ensure cell 1A reads Product ID [Non Editable], and that cell 2A contains a product ID. Bulk edits update existing products, so keep the exported IDs.
Product rows are not together Check
Rows 3-8 are a single product with multiple variants. Row 3 is the First product row, and rows 4-8 are the Option rows. Keep each product's option rows directly under its first product row.
Same variant ID on more than one row Check
Don't edit existing values in this column (Variant ID). Each exported row has its own variant.
Row has more values than columns Fix before import
It's important to maintain this structure. Values past the last column usually mean a cell was split or shifted.
Row has fewer cells than columns Check
It's important to maintain this structure. Missing cells can shift values into the wrong column.
Product type is not physical or service Check
You can only import physical and service products. Don't edit existing values in this column.
Download product Fix before import
You can only import physical and service products. You can't import download products.
Different value on an option row Check
If the product has multiple options, like size and color, only add this value to the first product row. This option row has a different value, so it is not changed.
Product page missing Fix before import
Product Page: Required. The store page URL slug where the product will import, without the /. Must match an existing store page URL slug.
Product URL missing Fix before import
Product URL: Required. The URL slug the product will have on your site, without the /.

Title: Required. Up to 200 characters.
SKU longer than 60 characters Fix before import

Option name and value not paired Fix before import
Each pair of Option Name # and Option Value # creates a variant.
Option names differ between variants Check
Option Names: the names of the drop-down menus on a product details page. Each variant of a product uses the same menus.
Two variants have the same options Check
Add a new row for every possible combination of options in the product. Each row is a different combination.
More than 250 variants Fix before import
In both versions, you can import up to 250 variants per product.
Too many products Fix before import
You can import up to 10,000 products to a version 7.1 site, and up to 200 products to a version 7.0 site.
Price is exactly halfway between two cents Check
The price field only supports two decimal places, so round values to the nearest hundredth. A value exactly halfway can round either way, so choose it yourself.
Price is not a number Fix before import
Enter numbers and decimal points (.) only.
Price over 1,000,000 Fix before import
You can't import products priced over 1,000,000 in any currency.
Sale price is not lower than the price Fix before import

Stock: the number of products or variants in stock. Enter unlimited for items with unlimited stock.
No categories Check
Categories (version 7.1): Required. Ensure these match existing categories.
Category is a name, not a URL slug Check
Categories: enter the URL slug from the filtered category or subcategory page, including the /. Example: /clothing. Copy the slug from your store; the tool cannot know it.
Category longer than 25 characters Check
Categories: up to 25 characters per category.
Tag longer than 80 characters Check
Tags: up to 80 characters per tag. Separate tags by commas.
Weight or size is not a number Fix before import
Weight, Length, Width, Height: enter numbers (up to 10,000) and decimal points (.) only.
Weight or size over 10,000 Fix before import
Weight, Length, Width, Height: enter numbers (up to 10,000) and decimal points (.) only.
Control or replacement characters Check
Common formatting problems include nonstandard characters. These cells contain invisible control characters or the mark, which usually means text was damaged.

Questions

Limits and privacy

Is my file sent anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file and makes the fixed copy on your device. To check, load this page, turn off your network connection, and choose your file: the check still works. Read the privacy page for details.

Why do some cells get an apostrophe?

A cell that starts with =, @, a tab or a carriage return can run as a formula when the CSV is opened in a spreadsheet. So can a cell that starts with + or - and has formula syntax after it, such as -SUM(A1). The download puts an apostrophe in front of these cells. The apostrophe is imported as part of the value. Each of these cells is listed in the changes, so you can edit it if the apostrophe is not what you want.

Other cells that start with + or -, such as +tag, are not changed. If such a cell is not a plain number, such as -5, it is listed as a note because it may be read as a formula if you open the file in a spreadsheet app.

Does a clean check mean the import will work?

Not always. Catalog Fix cannot see your site, so it cannot know your store page slugs or your categories. The results list every store page and category in the file. Make sure each one exists in Squarespace before you import. Squarespace reports “Product page not found” or “Categories not assigned” when they do not match.

Can I use it to move products to another site?

Catalog Fix checks the bulk-edit format, where the Product ID and Variant ID cells keep their exported values. To move products between sites, Squarespace asks you to empty those cells, which this check reports as a problem. Most of the other rules are the same, so the results are still useful.
